Tennis is the new passion in India and second only to cricket
in popularity.
The WTA Bangalore Open 2006 event is certain to set a trend in
Indian tennis with this being the first Tier III WTA event to
be held in the city. The hometown of ace tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi,
Bangalore is an ideal city to host the show. The stupendous growth
of Bangalore as an IT capital has brought in its wake shopping
malls, hotels and duplexes of international standards. Thankfully,
it still retains the beautiful parks and quaint buildings reminiscent
of the pre-independence era.
The fifth edition of the Sony Ericsson WTA tour in India starts
on the 13th of February and concludes on the 19th of February,
2006. This short but exciting event is the second Tier III tournament
played in India, after the Sunfeast Open played in September 2005
in Kolkata. The prize money being played for in the Bangalore
tournament is US $ 175,000.
The highlights of the tour will definitely be matches featuring
home favorites Sania Mirza, Shikha and Neha Uberoi. On court,
the excitement should be palpable, and players from all over the
world will enjoy the challenge of playing to an appreciative,
sports-passionate crowd.
Globosport has once more triumphed in bringing
such a high profile event to our country and city. The event will
offer players and visitors from all across the globe a chance
to get into the groove of a city which is youthful, vibrant and
friendly.
